Family And Their Four Children Die In Auto Crash

A family of six was killed in an auto accident on the Bekwara-Abochiche route in the Ugep town in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Mr. Edet Eteng, his wife, Ikow, and four of his children were killed in a car accident last weekend.

According to sources, the four children were buried in Ugep on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, while the man and wife’s bodies were placed at one of the hospital mortuaries in Ogoja LGA.

Eteng and his family were said to be from Abuja and were in his village (Ugep) to celebrate the Leboku festival.

The victims were on their way to Abuja when their automobile was claimed to have crashed with an oncoming vehicle, killing them instantly.

According to a witness, the accident occurred when the vehicle carrying the family deviated from its lane and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Other family members were shocked because late Eteng had recently lost his aged mother a few days after celebrating her birthday.

The event was confirmed by the Feral Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Cross River, SC Istifanus Ibrahim, who stated the tragedy involving two vehicles also injured two additional people.

He stated that the incident occurred near the Otokpuru axis in the state’s Bekwarra Local Government Area and that the victims were brought to Abuochichie Cottage Hospital.

“The information we gathered from security agents and a good Samaritan who were involved in the rescue operation because our post is a bit far from the scene of the accident, was that the probable cause of the fatal accident was overspeeding,” he said.

“The accident claimed the lives of 6 persons, including one adult male (father) identified as Edet Eteng, one adult female (mother), and four children (three females and one male) all from one family.”

“Road users, especially drivers, must as a matter of responsibility minimize speed during this rainy season because a lot can happen that may be beyond their control,” he added.
