FCT Area Council Chairmen Face Heat Over N100bn Financial Irregularities

The House of Representatives’ Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has summoned the chairmen and finance directors of the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over alleged financial infractions exceeding N100 billion. The audit report, covering the financial year ended December 31, 2021, revealed widespread breaches of financial regulations, including failure to remit statutory deductions, poor asset management, and unaccounted expenditures.

The affected councils are Abaji, Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali. A breakdown of the unremitted liabilities shows Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) owes N2.19 billion, Bwari N1.49 billion, and Kwali N1.46 billion. Gwagwalada has liabilities of N1.01 billion, Kuje N892.2 million, and Abaji N593.8 million.

The PAC chairman, Rep. Bamidele Salam, has given the officials a final opportunity to appear before the committee on February 11, 2026, warning that failure to comply would lead to arrest.
