FG Shuts Down Over 13.5 million Social Media Accounts

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced that it has closed 13,597,057 social media accounts on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for sharing offensive content and violating Nigeria’s Code of Practice for online platforms.

The agency stated that this enforcement action was based on the 2024 Compliance Report submitted by major service providers, including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

NITDA praised the platforms for their cooperation and compliance with Nigeria’s regulations, which were established in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Highlights of the 2024 Compliance Report include: Registered complaints: 754,629, Content removed: 58,909,112, Content reuploaded after appeal: 420,439, Accounts shut down/deactivated: 13,597,057

NITDA noted that these figures reflect the platforms’ commitment to safeguarding users and eliminating harmful content in accordance with national laws. The agency emphasized that all online platforms operating in Nigeria must be locally registered, meet tax obligations, and follow the Code of Practice.

The agency also affirmed that it will continue collaborating with industry stakeholders, civil society, and regulators to enhance user safety, promote digital literacy, and ensure transparency throughout Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
