FIFA Opens Investigation Into Argentina Following Contentious Behaviour Before And After The World Cup

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup final by defeating France on penalties, and FIFA has said that it is looking into the national team’s behaviour following their victory.

The world governing body has “opened proceedings” against the Albiceleste for what it believes to be violations of the fair play and player misconduct articles of the FIFA disciplinary code during and after the championship match.

As the Argentina team celebrated their third world cup victory, videos of their celebration rapidly went viral, with contentious photos of Martinez receiving the Golden Glove trophy drawing criticism.

Even after Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain scored a hat-trick and converted his penalty kick in the shootout, the Aston Villa goalie was seen making fun of the french forward.

Additionally, he was seen calling for a moment of silence in the locker room following the game to remember Mbappe. He was also seen holding a doll baby with the striker’s face stuck on.

Szymon Marciniak, the referee, issued yellow cards to five Argentina players, including Martinez, who was seen dancing after French misses and flinging the ball away before penalties during the shootout.

The Argentina Football Association may be required to pay a sizable fee if the Albiceleste decides to enter a guilty plea to any accusations that may be brought against them.

Even so, Ecuador and Serbia were punished with partial stadium closures for violating the discrimination rule, and Serbia was also punished for violating the misconduct rule. These teams were among those who caught FIFA’s attention in addition to the tournament’s winners.

Mexico was also fined 100,000 Swiss Francs and ordered to play one game behind closed doors due to racial chants. Also, FIFA initiated proceedings against Croatia for alleged misconduct and offensive behaviour violations.

This behaviour should surely be punished, especially that of the Argentine Goalie, as they also show lack of respect for colleagues and zero sportsmanship.
