The Nigerian Federal Government has once again confirmed its strong stance that ensuring food security continues to be a primary focus at the national level, highlighting its dedication to advancing the country’s farming industry in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, shared this update while overseeing the handover of agricultural supplies to small-scale farmers last Wednesday in Osogbo. Standing in for him was Ayodele Olawumi, who serves as the Director of Agricultural Extension within the ministry, and through this representative, Kyari indicated that authorities are rolling out extensive changes designed to enhance output, generate employment opportunities, and lower living expenses for citizens.
He pointed out that in addition to broader economic adjustments, officials have launched specific aid programs and urgent measures to soften the effects of the current nationwide shortage of food supplies.
“President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated unwavering political will and commitment to transforming Nigeria’s agriculture sector, with food security positioned as one of the central pillars of his administration’s priorities,” Kyari said.
He detailed how, starting from 2023, the central authorities have undertaken a detailed assessment of current farming initiatives to pinpoint required modifications and confirm compatibility with the department’s fundamental responsibilities. According to him, this process has resulted in the introduction of multiple initiatives focused on addressing the difficulties faced by cultivators, all while guaranteeing that nourishment stays obtainable, reachable, and reasonably priced for every individual in Nigeria.
The minister indicated that providing these agricultural materials realizes President Tinubu’s pledge to assist growers and promote greater cultivation of crops, portraying it as an element within a larger strategy to elevate the country’s overall food production levels and maintain steady market rates.
“The ultimate goal of every nation is to attain food security, a global priority underscored in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Kyari said. “This administration remains resolute in its commitment to developing the agricultural sector in alignment with the SDGs.”
Kyari encouraged those receiving the aid to regard this program as evidence of the authorities’ genuine concern for their well-being and to respond in kind by enhancing their yields and aiding in the overall steadiness of the nation’s food resources.
During his comments, Taiwo Aiyegoro, who acts as the ministry’s coordinator at the state level, remarked that this program showcases the continuous backing from the Federal Government toward small-scale cultivators, whom he characterized as the essential foundation supporting Nigeria’s entire farming industry.
