The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has directed the immediate controlled demolition of a four-storey residential building at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after structural engineers declared it unsafe due to severe foundation defects that pose an imminent risk of collapse.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, GADA Director General, Arc. Uche Ukeje, said officials from the authority’s Building Control Unit, Engineering Department, and Town Planning Department swiftly responded to distress reports of visible cracks in the building.
A preliminary structural assessment revealed extensive cracking around the foundation, confirming that the building’s base had been badly compromised. The structure was subsequently declared unfit for human habitation.
“As a precautionary measure, all occupants have been safely evacuated,” the statement read. “Arrangements are now in place for the building to be brought down in a controlled manner to avoid any loss of lives and minimise damage to adjacent properties.”
GADA assured residents of Aba that the situation is fully under control and urged the public not to panic. The authority called on people to steer clear of the affected area while demolition and related safety operations are ongoing and to cooperate with officials on site.
An investigation has been launched to determine the root cause of the structural failure. GADA also appealed to residents across the city to promptly report any signs of building distress, such as cracks or Leaning walls, to the relevant authorities to prevent similar incidents.
