Glamour Girls Is First Nollywood Film To Join Netflix’s Global Top Five List

Glamour Girls is a two-part Nollywood film about independent single women embarking on their own paths within Nigeria’s traditionally patriarchal society. It gained widespread popularity in Nigeria.

The movie, which is a remake of the 1994 classic film of the same name, highlights the activities of single independent ladies who make money from providing escort services to rich men.

Glamour Girls remake was greeted with heavy criticism as some faulted the storyline while others noted that the movie promoted the concept of prostitution and taught no morals.

The film was received with mixed reviews from fans of Nollywood and film critics shortly a a day into its release. However, it also saw the film take the Number 1 spot on Netflix in Nigeria, reaching the Top 10 spot in 20 other countries worldwide including the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, South Africa, Kenya, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Qatar, Belgium, Panama and Nicaragua among others in the two days that followed.

Responding to the criticism, the executive producer and founder of Play Network, Charles Okpaleke, also known as Charles of Play, wrote in part.

“Shout out to all Nollywood filmmakers constantly going through the nightmare of making movies in Nigeria. You guys area blessing and an inspiration.

“And of course a huge shout out to other self-proclaimed Nollywood filmmakers and critics, who have produced numerous movies in their heads, won awards with them and even climbed the stage to make speeches, but are yet to produce any in reality. We see you, we are rooting for you! A win for one is a win for all.

Directed by Bunmi Ajekaiye and Produced by Abimbola Craig, Glamour Girls explores the fast life of a group of promiscuous women, living a life of glitz and glamour, and willing to do whatever it takes to maintain the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. The unrestricted access to wealth and privilege that once ruled their universe soon becomes secondary, following a murder and assumed theft that threatens their lives, both home and abroad. The film features Nse-Ikpe Etim, Sharon Ooja Egwurube, Toke Makinwa, Joselyn Dumas and Segilola Ogidan, among others.
