Gombe’s Self-Taught Genius, Dr. Usman Hadi Breaks Scientific Barriers with Water-Powered Stove and 78 Other Inventions

A 72-year-old inventor from Gombe State, Dr. Usman Hadi, has stunned the scientific community with a groundbreaking water-powered stove that operates without kerosene or gas. Developed over three years without any formal education, the innovation challenges long-standing assumptions that advanced technological breakthroughs must emerge from Western-style academic training.

Hadi’s stove harnesses the chemical potential of water likely through electrolysis or the combustion of hydrogen extracted from it to produce heat. While the exact process remains undisclosed due to limited technical documentation, similar principles have been explored in global studies, including a 2019 Journal of Cleaner Production paper on hydrogen energy.

This remarkable achievement is only one of Hadi’s over 78 recorded inventions, which span from practical tools to ambitious prototypes, including a Vespa-engine-powered helicopter he built in 1971 that unfortunately crashed. Despite setbacks, his relentless creativity has set him apart as one of Nigeria’s most extraordinary grassroots innovators.

In recognition of his contributions, Gombe State University awarded him an honorary PhD and appointed him as a lecturer, enabling him to inspire a new generation of thinkers. Yet, his story also underscores a deeper issue Nigeria’s grassroots inventors often lack the institutional and financial support to refine, patent, and commercialize their work for global impact.

Hadi’s journey is a testament to the untapped potential that thrives outside conventional laboratories and elite universities, proving that brilliance knows no boundaries of age, education, or location.
