Husband Remanded For Allegedly Killing Wife During Argument

A husband was sent to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for the suspected murder of his wife, Mariam Awa, on Monday, December 18th.

Matthew Isaac, 37, is accused of committing the crime on October 24, 2023, in the Igando region of Lagos State.

Isaac and his wife fought about his plan to visit his ailing father in his hometown alone.

When the disagreement became physical, he smacked her head against a wall, causing her to slump.

When Isaac discovered she had died, he summoned his friend, and the two of them buried her in a shallow grave near their home.

Isaac was charged with murder and appeared before Magistrate Linda Balogun in a Magistrate’s Court in Yaba, Lagos State.

Chekwube Okeh, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant committed an offence that violated Section 222 and was punishable under Section 223 of the Lagos State Criminal Law 2015.

She requested that the accused be remanded to the penitentiary facility pending the conclusion of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The charge read, “That you, Matthew Isaac, on October 24, 2023, around 12.15 am, at No. 15, Governor Road, Igando Oko Filling Station, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill the deceased, one Mariam Awa, by hitting her head on the wall, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

The defendant did not enter a plea.

The defendant was remanded to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre by the magistrate for legal advice from the DPP.

Magistrate Balogun continued the case until January 24, 2023, to await DPP advice.
