Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, has declared that he is not obligated to provide explanations about the peace agreement reached with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, emphasizing that the key outcome is the restoration of peace in Rivers State.
During a media chat monitored in Abuja on Thursday, Wike addressed inquiries about his recent reconciliation with Fubara, following months of severe political tension that risked destabilizing the oil-rich state.
The conflict between the two leaders had triggered a significant political crisis in Rivers, attracting nationwide attention and leading to interventions from notable figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who is said to have facilitated the truce.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor and a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), accused certain unnamed individuals of profiting from the turmoil, claiming they had turned the crisis into a personal “oil well,” exploiting it for financial gain.
“Those who were benefitting from the crisis are not happy that we have made peace,” Wike said. “They were busy collecting money here and there, fuelling problems just to line their pockets.”
He reiterated that he was not required to disclose details of the reconciliation to anyone, asserting that the primary focus should be on the fact that stability has been restored to the state.
Wike’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about the political concessions that may have been made to achieve the truce. However, he seemed unconcerned by such discussions, stressing that the resolution of the conflict benefits the people of Rivers State the most.
