Is Hantavirus Contagious Among Humans? Here’s What We Know So Far

In a shocking turn of events, three passengers have tragically lost their lives following a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship traveling from Argentina to Cape Verde. As of May 11, 2026, the World Health Organization has confirmed just one case of this potentially deadly virus, but they assure us that the overall risk to the public remains low.

The ordeal has sparked urgent questions about how hantavirus spreads. Traditionally, this virus is known to leap from rodents—like rats and mice—to humans. Virginie Sauvage, the head of France’s National Reference Centre for Hantaviruses, emphasizes that pinpointing the specific strain involved in this outbreak is essential for understanding this alarming situation.

How Common Are Hantaviruses?

Hantaviruses are surprisingly widespread, popping up in various corners of the globe year-round. Countries such as China, Russia, and South Korea report thousands of infections annually, while the Americas, Finland, and France see hundreds of cases each year. Importantly, only certain strains of hantaviruses—those that are exclusive to rodents—can be transmitted to humans.

How Dangerous Are They?

These viruses are divided into two categories: Old World hantaviruses (found in Europe, Asia, and Africa) and New World hantaviruses (circulating in North, Central, and South America). The mortality rates can vary dramatically—Old World viruses can reach a mortality rate of up to 14%. However, in developed nations like France, fatalities are rare and typically occur in individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Symptoms can range from mild, such as body aches and nausea, to severe complications like acute renal failure. New World hantaviruses, on the other hand, can be much more lethal, with mortality rates soaring above 40%. These cases can escalate swiftly, impacting breathing and potentially leading to heart problems.

What’s the Treatment?

Quick medical intervention significantly improves outcomes for patients infected with hantavirus. While there isn’t a specific treatment available, healthcare providers focus on managing symptoms. For severe cases affecting lung function, oxygen therapy in an intensive care unit may become necessary. Those working in high-risk sectors like forestry and agriculture should remain vigilant, as they are particularly susceptible to infection. The elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems or pre-existing health concerns are also at heightened risk.

Is It Contagious?

The big question: Could this be a case of human-to-human transmission? While it remains unclear if the Andes virus—a strain confirmed to spread between humans—was behind the outbreak, it requires close contact, typically within families. Generally, humans contract hantavirus through inhaling contaminated aerosols from rodents or through direct contact with their droppings, urine, or bites.

For the passengers aboard the ill-fated cruise ship, two scenarios could explain the situation: either the virus was transmitted from person to person, or isolated infections occurred prior to boarding, potentially if the individuals were together elsewhere.

What Could Sequencing Reveal?

Analyzing the virus from the infected passenger could unlock valuable insights. Since the ship departed from Ushuaia in southern Argentina, suspicion falls on the Andes virus. However, if it turns out to be a different strain from the New World—like the Sin Nombre virus, which is limited to North America—then the theory of contamination in South America could be eliminated. If it is indeed a new World hantavirus spreading between humans on this ship, that would mark an unprecedented chapter in our understanding of this virus.

Stay tuned as this story develops, and let’s hope for swift clarity and resolution.
