The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has openly acknowledged that they are to blame for the high percentage of failures observed in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
During a tearful news conference on Wednesday, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, fought back tears as he acknowledged the dismal circumstances surrounding this year’s exam.
In response to many complaints of technological difficulties, abnormally low scores, and purported irregularities mentioned during the UTME exercise, Prof. Oloyede declared that about 379,997 students will be given the chance to repeat and repeatedly dabbed at his face with a handkerchief as he apologized for the incident and accepted full responsibility for the carelessness of certain employees.
He disclosed that candidates who sat for the exam in 65 centres across Lagos and 92 centres in the Owerri Zone, which covers the five South-East states, would be required to retake the test.
This move comes after weeks of public outcry from candidates and parents over irregular scores and glitches, which prompted calls for an investigation and corrective measures by the examination body.
