Judiciary Chair Wants DOJ To Review Rittenhouse Verdict: ‘A Miscarriage Of Justice’

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee condemned the ruling issued Friday in Kyle Rittenhouse trial and called on the Justice Department to review the court’s decision.

Rep. Jerry Nadler’s remarks were fueled by a message issued by President Joe Biden, who, unlike progressives, said he respected the jury’s decision.

Mr Nadler tweeted that Rittenhouse was found not guilty of all charges that the verdict was a “miscarriage of justice” that “sets a dangerous precedent that justifies federal review by the DOJ.”

The senior House Democrat argued, “When people engage in First Amendment-protected protests, justice cannot tolerate armed individuals crossing state borders looking for trouble.”

It is unclear how the Justice Department will review the case, as the agency only has the power to investigate law enforcement agencies. According to its own website, it has no power to “interfere in matters of state law”.

Mr Biden told reporters while addressing the jury’s decision on the White House lawn some time ago: “I stand by the conclusion the jury has made. The jury system works and we have to follow it.”

In a lengthy statement issued by the White House minutes later, the president offered a slightly different tone, claiming he felt “outraged and concerned” by the decision while urging protesters to remain peaceful.

“While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, including me, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken,” he said.

“I followed through on a promise to bring Americans together, because I believe that what unites us is more than what divides us. I know we’re not going to heal our nation’s wounds overnight.” But I stand by my commitment to do everything in my power to ensure that every American is treated fairly and with dignity under the law,” Mr Biden continued.

The judiciary chair’s statement was in line with progressives in the House such as Rashida Tlaib, who said Friday’s news was proof that the US justice system “protects white supremacy”.

Mr Rittenhouse’s trial comes as a separate court is debating the fate of three white men charged with stalking and killing a black man, Ahmaud Arbery, in Georgia.

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
