Just In: EFCC Accuses Rochas Okorocha Of N2.9 Billion Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has accused Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of Imo State, of collaborating with others to steal N2.9 billion in public funds, including an APC lawmaker and five firms.

According to Premium Times, the EFCC filed 17 accusations at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited are among the defendants, in addition to Okorocha.

The allegations were brought around the same time that Okorocha announced his ambition to run for president in 2023.

On Monday, the former governor stated that the country is experiencing a variety of difficulties that must be addressed.

He said, “I hear people talking about zoning, I’m not a candidate of zoning, I am a candidate of justice. Maybe the South-East has not been able to present their matter very well before the rest of Nigerians.

“I appeal to my party – APC, to allow a level-playing ground. And the South-East must know that power is not given, it is taken. You must reach out to people who you want to vote for you. But let justice reign.”

If elected, the congressman promised to heal the country, a problem he claimed previous presidents had failed to confront.

The EFCC announced in 2020 that it has returned N2.7 billion recovered from Okorocha to the Imo State Government.

The returned funds were part of the N7.9 billion collected from several bank accounts linked to the ex-governor, according to Imam Usman, Zonal Head of the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office.

According to Usman, N2.5 billion was returned under Emeka Ihedioha’s brief administration, while Hope Uzodinma, the state’s current governor, received N514 million.

The EFCC would prosecute Rochas Okorocha after its investigation is completed, according to the zonal chief.

Okorocha and Uzodinma, both members of the All Progressives Congress, have been at odds since the governor accused his predecessor of corruption and personalizing state-owned properties.
