Kate Henshaw Reveals Hidden Challenges Of Surrogacy

The rising prevalence of surrogacy in Nigeria has alarmed veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw, who warns that in the lack of adequate legal protections, it might be exploited to take advantage of financially vulnerable people.

Henshaw emphasized the pressing need for Nigeria to pass unambiguous and binding laws to control surrogacy agreements and safeguard the mental and physical health of surrogate mothers in an interview with News Central.

“Surrogacy is a means to exploit people who are not financially capable. You just pay them as they have a child for you,” she said. “But what will make you look after them? Are you bound under any law to ensure they’re cared for before and after delivery?”

“There are lots of emotions attached to carrying a child, apart from the changes in the body. There are mental changes. Women… they can die, you know? So it shouldn’t be something to be just thought of lightly.”

Calling on Nigerian lawmakers, she added:

“I hope Nigeria rises to meet this. I hope we have laws that will work and not just be suggestions.”

It’s essential to promote awareness about ethical surrogacy arrangements, ensure proper legal protections, and support individuals in making informed decisions without coercion or undue influence.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
