Lagos Declares August 20 Public Holiday To Celebrate Isese Day

To honor Isese Day, an annual festival of Yoruba culture and customs, the Lagos State Government has designated Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a day off for governmental employees.

In order to allow traditional worshippers and the general public to fully engage in the cultural observance aimed at promoting and conserving indigenous heritage, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the holiday.

The Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, made the news in a circular dated August 18, 2025, which was distributed to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

According to the circular, the proclamation is in line with the state government’s plans to strengthen the preservation of Yoruba cultural values and promote traditional institutions.

“Mr. Governor has approved that Wednesday, 20th August 2025 be declared a work-free day for public servants in the state,” the notice read. “Consequently, work resumes on Thursday, 21st August 2025 at 8:00 a.m.”

Isese Day is a significant cultural and religious holiday in Nigeria, particularly among the Yoruba people, honoring their traditional religion and heritage. The term “Isese” itself translates to “tradition” or “origin” in the Yoruba language. It’s a day for adherents to pay homage to their deities (Orishas), ancestors, and the enduring legacy of their indigenous religion.
