Lagos Government Arraigns Man For Assaulting Firefighter

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has formally charged one Waheed Balogun, 40, with assaulting a firefighter while on duty on Monday, October 1, 2023, at 167 Egbe Road, Cele Egbe, Ikotun, Lagos.

Ololade Agboola, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, said in a statement on Tuesday, November 21, that the suspect was arraigned before Magistrate A.A. Adesanya of a Special Offences (Mobile) Court sitting in the state’s Oshodi region.

According to Agboola, the suspect claims that the firefighters used their fire truck to hinder his tricycle/motorcycle park activities.

He was detained last Thursday by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force and is currently facing charges at the State’s Special Offences (Mobile) Court in Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos.

The presiding Magistrate, A. A. Adesanya, granted Balogun bail under strict conditions, requiring the accused to pay a bail amount of 200,000 Naira with two sureties who meet the following criteria: Lagos residency, public servants or clergymen, two years of tax payment receipts, LASSRA card, and National Identification Number (NIN).

The hearing has been postponed until December 19th, 2023, to allow all parties involved to finalise their affairs.

According to Margaret Adeseye, Director of the State’s Fire and Rescue Service, this incident is one of twelve public disturbances against the agency this year.

She emphasises the agency’s unshakable commitment to a thorough legal procedure, with the goal of ensuring justice is served and setting a precedent that deters similar crimes in the future.
