Lagos Government Cancels 50% Discount On Public Transport

The Lagos State Government has withdrawn the 50% transit fare concession on all Public transit Systems implemented by the Sanwo-Olu administration on August 2, 2023, to mitigate the impact of the elimination of the petrol subsidy.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) declared in a public notice published on Saturday, November 4, that public transportation charges will return to their previous levels as of November 5.

“The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday,” the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority said in a statement on Saturday.

Passengers were advised in the announcement that “transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate starting on Monday, November 6, 2023.” Residents were also urged to take note of the modification and make the required arrangements for the return to regular transit fare rates that prevailed prior to the August adjustment.

The governor, Sanwo-Olu, said on July 31 that, in an attempt to mitigate the impact of the elimination of the gasoline subsidy, state-owned bus transportation fares will be reduced by 50% and commercial yellow bus tickets by 25% on all routes.
