Exciting news for Lagosians! The Lagos State Government has announced the revival of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, nearly a decade after it was suspended. This initiative aims to inspire residents to take pride in their surroundings and tackle the pressing waste management challenges we face.
In a dynamic statement on Saturday, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab announced that the exercise will officially resume on Saturday, April 25, 2026, taking place on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
“Every Lagosian has a role to play! During this time, we’re all encouraged to clean our environments, clear drainage channels in front of our homes, and responsibly dispose of waste as a part of our civic duty to our city,” Wahab emphasized.
This initiative isn’t just about cleaning; it’s about coming together as a community to foster a healthier, more vibrant Lagos. The government is committed to enforcing these measures, supporting a culture of cleanliness that will benefit everyone.
“Let’s embrace this shared responsibility — it’s a crucial part of our vision for a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Lagos,” he stated passionately.
Wahab took a moment to reflect on the importance of reestablishing a culture of cleanliness that once thrived among Lagosians. “Before 2016, we had a strong culture that celebrated cleanliness. Once a month, we dedicate time to spruce up our neighborhoods and keep them shining. Unfortunately, we lost that rhythm.”
He highlighted the severe environmental challenges currently facing the state, stating, “The absence of our monthly clean-ups has resulted in escalating issues with waste and flooding. We’ve spent the last year discussing and agreeing that it’s time to bring this vital practice back.”
Wahab called on all residents to set aside just a couple of hours each month for this important cause. “It’s a small commitment — let’s come together, just once a month, to observe and improve the cleanliness of our environment, just as we did before 2016. It’s an effort that can make a world of difference!”
Previously, this monthly sanitation exercise, scheduled on the last Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., was suspended in November 2016 due to legal restrictions. This change coincided with rising issues of waste management, including clogged drainage systems and careless refuse disposal across the state.
Now, let’s roll up our sleeves and take action! Together, we can restore our beloved Lagos to its former glory. Are you ready to join the movement?
