Leaders Don’t Run Away — Fashola Advises Youth Against ‘Japa’

Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has urged Nigerian youths to stay in the nation and seek leadership positions instead of looking for opportunities outside in spite of the country’s current economic challenges.

Fashola emphasized the importance of resiliency and dedication to the country while speaking to graduates at Elizade University’s eighth and ninth convocation ceremonies in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.

A growing number of young Nigerians have decided to leave their country in recent years in pursuit of better opportunities; this phenomenon is sometimes referred to as “Japa.” Fashola, however, urged young Nigerians to stay and contribute significantly at home. “Why did Mrs. Folorunso Alakija not run away? Why did Chief Tunde Afolabi, who has contributed to Nigeria, not run away? Why are they still here?” he asked.

Fashola cited several successful Nigerians who chose to stay despite hardships, emphasizing that “leaders don’t run away even when things are tough.” He urged graduates to embrace the responsibilities that come with leadership, noting, “There were tough times when Chief Ade-Ojo was at the University of Nigeria, but Ade-Ojo didn’t leave. If he had left, there would be no Elizade University.”

Elizade University’s founder, Michael Ade-Ojo, expressed delight in the university’s objective of meeting the nation’s educational needs by generating talented graduates. “My vision has always been to provide world-class education right here in Nigeria,” Ade-Ojo said, adding that he is pleased with the institution’s progress.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
