Legendary Milan And Italy Defender Franco Baresi Passes On At 66

Franco Baresi, a former defender for Milan and Italy and one of the most iconic players of the 1980s and 1990s Italian football golden age, passed away at the age of 66.

“The entire history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi,” his former club said on Friday. “His example and integrity will be forever etched into the club’s DNA, just as his iconic No 6 shirt is.”

Baresi’s former club, where he was honorary vice-president, reported last year that he had surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule and that a cancer specialist had prescribed recovery treatment.

Baresi appeared alongside his longtime rival on the field, former Inter and Italy defender Giuseppe Bergomi, as one of the torchbearers for the Olympic flame at the Milano Cortina Winter Games opening ceremony in February.

After spending his entire 20-year career with Milan, winning six Serie A titles and three major European trophies, and serving as the team’s captain for 15 seasons before retiring in 1997, Baresi is considered an icon.

He became the first player in Milan’s history to have his No. 6 shirt retired at the conclusion of his playing career.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to AC Milan and the Italy football teams during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with all the players, staff, and fans who are mourning the loss of Franco Baresi. Most importantly, we send our deepest sympathies to his family—may they find comfort and strength in the memories of his incredible legacy.

Live with Purpose, Love with Passion. Remember to be happy
