Lionel Messi To Exit PSG At The End Of The Season

Paris Saint-Germain has announced that Lionel Messi will leave the club at the conclusion of this season, with the Argentine due to play his farewell game against Clermont Foot on Saturday, June 3.

PSG boss Christophe Galtier revealed the World Cup winner’s departure at a news conference on Thursday afternoon, June 1, naming Inter Miami as one of many possible destinations.

“Clermont Foot will be Messi’s final game at PSG,” said Galtier. “I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. It will be Leo’s last match at the Parc des Princes.”

Lionel Messi joined PSG in 2021 and has two Ligue 1 titles to his name.

The 35-year-old stated that leaving Barcelona allowed him to evolve as a player, and others speculate that leaving his comfort zone allowed him to acquire the leadership characteristics he demonstrated in December when he won the Qatar World Cup.

According to French media this morning, Messi might make a stunning return to the Camp Nou, although Barcelona would struggle to afford such a move.

However, L’Equipe suggests that Messi join Inter Miami and be leased to Barcelona.

Inter Miami, headed by Phil Neville, is thought to be giving Messi a hefty package, while Asian teams are still interested.

“I hope that he will be welcomed in the best way,” added Galtier ahead of Messi’s final game. PSG have already won the Ligue 1 title.

There have also been reports that the World Cup winner is on the verge of signing a lucrative contract with Saudi club Al-Hilal.

Last month, rumors circulated that Messi had been given a deal worth £522 million by Al-Hilal, despite the reservations of his wife Antonela Roccuzzo.

Jorge Messi, Messi’s father, swiftly denied rumours that a decision had been made about his son’s club for next season.

Taking to social media, Messi’s father said: “There is absolutely nothing with any club for next year. The decision will never be made before Lionel finished the league with PSG.

“Once the season is over it will be time to analyze and see what is there, and then make a decision.

“There are always rumors and many use the name of Lionel to gain notoriety but the truth is only one and we can assure that there is nothing with anyone.

“Neither verbal, nor signed, nor agreed, and there will not be until the end of the season.”

Messi had a standout season in France, scoring 16 goals and dishing out 16 assists.
