Many people have expressed their sympathies to the United’s forward on social media, including fans, teammates, and others.

Liverpool fans are also eager to make their own gesture when United visits Anfield this evening, as they are planning a minute’s applause.

A Liverpool fan Facebook page wrote: “If you are lucky enough to be attending the game tomorrow evening, then please show a mark of respect to Cristiano Ronaldo and his family by taking part in the round of applause which will be held on the seventh minute.

“Rivalries should be set aside in heartbreaking circumstances such as these. You’ll Never Walk Alone, CR7 Jr.”

People flocked to the comment section to express their support for the decision of the fans to sympathise with Ronaldo.

One person said: “Great gesture! Show the man some love whilst he is going through a horrid time. Can’t imagine the pain he must be going through. We’re humans first, football fans second.”

Another said: “This is a really nice gesture and this is what football is about! Rivalries aside, let’s show our class by doing this.”

Following the tragic news, Manchester United confirmed on Tuesday that Ronaldo will not play in the Premier League match against Liverpool.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
