Malawi Makes History: First WAFCON Final Triumph with a 3-1 Win over Algeria

Malawi secured a 3-1 victory over Algeria in Rabat on Wednesday, advancing to the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in their debut tournament and continuing their remarkable run.

The Chawinga sisters once again led Malawi, known as the Scorchers—the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition—who achieved another major upset after defeating powerhouse teams Ghana and Nigeria.

The match was intense and chaotic, with numerous opportunities for both sides. Two players were sent off in a dramatic first half following VAR reviews. Morgane Belkhiter received a red card for denying Malawi captain Tabitha Chawinga a clear scoring chance, reducing Algeria to ten players.

In the 33rd minute, Tabitha Chawinga scored an impressive overhead kick that struck the crossbar, bounced down, and then spun over the line, giving Malawi the lead. Just before halftime, Temwa Chawinga netted a goal during stoppage time, doubling Malawi’s advantage and establishing a commanding position at the break.

Rose Kadzere was also shown a red card before halftime after a VAR review for a dangerous studs-up challenge, leaving Algeria temporarily shorthanded.
After halftime, Algeria came out with renewed determination and managed to pull a goal back through Ikram Adjabi, reigniting hope for a comeback.

However, Tabitha Chawinga scored her second goal of the night, restoring Malawi’s two-goal lead and securing their place in the final on Sunday.

Congratulations to Malawi on this historic achievement! Your hard work and determination have truly paid off. Wishing you continued success in the final!
