Man Dies After Dog Mistakenly Steps On Trigger Of Rifle

Sheriff’s deputies near Geuda Springs, Kansas, claim that a dog accidentally stepped on a loaded rifle while his owner was out hunting, fatally shooting a passenger in the owner’s vehicle.

According to a statement from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, Joseph Austin Smith, 30, of Wichita, was shot in the back as he was in the front passenger seat of a pickup vehicle.

“The back seat contained hunting gear and a rifle,” the statement said. “A canine belonging to the owner of the pickup stepped on the rifle causing the weapon to discharge. The fired round struck the passenger who died of his injuries on scene.”

The sheriff’s office also stated that the shooting was an accident and that the investigation had been resolved.

Following a 911 call, responders were sent to the area just before 9:50 am on Saturday (local time), according to the sheriff’s office. The caller of the 911 call and the owner of the dog and vehicle are both unknown, according to the authorities. Initially, it was unclear what had happened to the dog.

Smith’s coworkers at Browns Plumbing Services in Wichita, according to a GoFundMe page they started, remembered him as “kind, hilarious, knowledgeable, and very loving.”

As of Wednesday morning, the campaign has amassed more than $10,000. The authenticity of the fundraising page was validated by GoFundMe. A Washington Post query for comment on Wednesday morning did not immediately receive a response from Browns Plumbing Services

The incident on Saturday is not the first to involve a dog and a loaded gun.

Canines firing weapons have shot or killed numerous individuals across the country in recent years, escalating calls for stricter gun laws and safety precautions.

The most recent data, according to the Pew Research Centre, suggests that more than 500 individuals were killed inadvertently with guns in 2020, despite federal data showing that the great majority of gun killings in the United States are suicides or homicides.

According to a July article in The Washington Post, the number of weapons anticipated to have been acquired in the United States between the epidemic years of 2020 and 2021 was over 43 million.

According to NBC News, a shepherd-mix puppy accidentally shot a guy in the wrist in Florida in 2004. According to NBC News, which cited the local sheriff’s office, Jerry Allen Bradford had been planning to kill seven puppies since he couldn’t find them a home at the time of the shooting.
