Man Given An 18-years Sentence For Burning A Pregnant Teenager Alive

A French court yesterday handed down an 18-year prison term to a man who had stabbed and burned his 15-year-old pregnant girlfriend alive.

The 2019 murder of the secondary school student, who was only given the name Shaina in court, reignited concern in France about the high rate of women being killed by intimate partners.

In order to kill Shaina and burn her body, the defendant, who was a 17-year-old high school student at the time, led her to a shed in the village of Creil, north of Paris.

Shaina suffered “multiple wounds” from a knife, according to the results of the post-mortem forensic examination, yet she was still breathing when the fire began.

Attorney General Loic Abrial claims that the crime was “premeditated at every stage.”

He had asked for a harsher sentence of 20 or 30 years, but the judge took the accused’s age into account.

Yasin, Shaina’s brother, wept vehemently in response.

“18 years! He yelled, “That’s justice in France!” in the Oise special juvenile court before getting into a heated argument with the defendant and collapsing and being taken to the hospital.

Restrictions prevent the accused, who has adamantly maintained his innocence, from being identified by the media.

He reacted angrily to the decision after the four hours of debate, asking “Why, why? You’re mistaken; I’m innocent.”

Elise Arfi, the defense attorney, stated that it was “too early” to make any comments regarding a potential appeal.

According to official statistics, a woman in France is killed by her current or former spouse every three days, therefore the case caused a stir there.

In addition to Shaina’s youth, four other young individuals received suspended sentences ranging from six months to two years in prison for sexually assaulting her two years prior, making her death all the more shocking.

According to lawyers, Shaina’s attackers released graphic pictures of her assault online to portray her as someone “who they can sleep with but also get rid of.”

Shaina was described by her mother as “funny and smiling” and was most likely in the early stages of pregnancy at the time of her murder, according to authorities.

She had left after a family supper the day before she was killed. Family members had discovered a positive pregnancy test in her handbag.

She claimed that the accused, with whom she had a romantic relationship, was the father.

According to the prosecution, the accused had been “willing to destroy everything to save his image” and win his parents’ acceptance.

Negar Haeri, the attorney for Shaina’s family, estimated that he could “be out in eight years” between pre-trial detention and sentence reductions as against the 18-years given by the judge.

“Justice doesn’t care about violence against women,” she declared.
