Many Still Don’t Know Why Women’s Shirt Button Are On The Left And Men On The Right

Many people have had an exciting year of discovery with two theories emerging on why women’s clothing differs from that of men.

Internet users are looking into why women’s shirts have buttons on the opposite side as men’s.

According to the Daily Star, there are several ideas as to why this is the case, one of which dates back to when males were engaged in war, and another which has to do with raising children.

Melanie M. Moore, the founder of the Elizabeth & Clarke women’s blouse line, has a different opinion and believes she has finally uncovered the reason.

Since most men held their swords in their right hand, men’s clothing had buttons on the right side, according to one theory.

To fight, they needed to be able to rapidly unbutton their shirt, and doing so with their left hand was faster.

Many people believe that women’s buttons are on the left because they carry their newborns in their left arms.

It’s likely that women’s clothing was made to be buttoned on the left and open on the right so that breastfeeding could be done with the free right hand.

It could also possibly be due to the fact that women were once expected to ride horses side-saddle.

As they galloped across fields, they would have blocked the breeze from blowing up their clothes by buttoning up on the left.

Another explanation for the button placement differences could be linked to the advent of emancipation when women began to discard their girdles in favor of pants and other traditionally male clothing.

Designers placed buttons on the left side of women ‘s clothes as a practical technique for distinguishing between men’s and women’s apparel.

Melanie M. Moore gave her opinion saying, “When buttons were invented in the 13th century they were, like most new technology, very expensive.

“Wealthy women back then did not dress themselves — their lady’s maid did. Since most people were right-handed, this made it easier for someone standing across from you to button your dress.”

There could be a number of reasons why men’s and women’s shirts are buttoned differently.

But, at this point, it’s all about plain old-fashioned tradition.
