In a startling turn of events, a fierce blaze has erupted at the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a facility currently undergoing an extensive multibillion-naira renovation.
As details continue to unfold, much remains unclear about the nature of the fire, including its cause and the extent of the damage incurred. Emergency responders are actively on the scene, diligently working to assess the situation and bring the fire under control.
This dramatic incident comes on the heels of a previous fire scare at the airport. Just a month ago, on September 6, 2023, smoke was detected in the international wing, specifically at Terminal 1. At that time, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) attributed the smoke to a suspected electrical spark in the baggage hall ceiling, ultimately tracing it back to a burning lithium inverter battery installation located in the terminal’s basement.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether this latest fire is related to electrical faults or other technical issues, leaving travelers and airport staff on edge.
Stay tuned for updates as the investigation unfolds.
