Mexico Set To Elect First Female President In 2024

Mexico is about to have its first female president as both the ruling coalition and the opposition nominate women as candidates for the 2024 election.

The country’s ruling party has nominated former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as its candidate for the June 2 elections, the three-party coalition of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) announced Thursday.

Last week, the centrist opposition coalition Frente Amplio por México (Widely Front for Mexico) elected as its candidate a senator and computer engineer, Xóchitl Gálvez.

Sheinbaum beat out five of her party’s opponents for the nomination.

One of his competitors, former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, denounced irregularities in the process and spoke of an unfair procedure. Sheinbaum is close to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who was barred from running for office after six years in power.
