Mixed Reactions When Buhari Announces New Naira Note

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday finally unveiled the redesigned Naira banknotes proposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
CBN governor Godwin Emefiele said on Tuesday that the president will unveil his redesigned N1,000, N500 and N200 banknotes.

Today’s announcement marks his first time in 19 years that Nigeria has redesigned its banknotes.

At a post-ceremony briefing before the Federal Executive Board, the CBN governor debunked suggestions that the early release of new banknotes was a means of targeting some Nigerians.

Emefiele appealed to the public and urged them to stop such speculation, adding that there was no need to perpetuate such information.
According to him, CBN will step up its monitoring process and question its withdrawal process.

Emefiele argued that working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to monitor the purpose of all heavy trading would severely limit the amount of cash people could withdraw at the counter.

He argued that redesigned banknotes could never be counterfeited, adding that CBN would redesign banknotes every five to eight years to prevent such incidents.

Reacting to the look of the new notes which has started circulating the internet, some Nigerians are not happy with the ‘changes’ discovered.
