The Beautiful Surprises and Deep Joys of Motherhood
Unlike most professions where a certain level of experience is needed before commencing, motherhood often comes without formal experience— you learn as you go. For many of us, it doesn’t require a training manual, it simply happens, and with it begins a journey like no other.
For me, every moment in motherhood has been precious, even the earliest ones. I still remember the exact moment I stood holding the pregnancy test strip, trembling with both joy and uncertainty.
Thanks be to God for the successful journey of my first pregnancy. From the moment I first saw my son, I was filled with gratitude to God and unspeakable joy. And as I held him in my arms, carefully wrapped in his shawl, I felt a love so deep and overwhelming that words couldn’t capture it. That was the beginning of a journey marked by wonder, sacrifice, and the quiet, powerful bond between a mother and her child.
I watched my son grow from a baby to a toddler, to a preschooler, absorbing new things and making little decisions. Most importantly, I noticed how he began to rely on me—not just for food and comfort, but for guidance and love.
One moment that stands out clearly was when we were watching “The Lion King” together. He was just four years old. Suddenly, he turned to me with teary eyes and asked, “Mummy, are you going to die someday too? Who will take care of me when you die? Will God give me another mummy that will love me as you do?” My heart melted. It was one of those moments that leaves you smiling and aching at the same time.
I gently explained to him that death is inevitable, but we can always pray for a long life. That moment sparked something deeper in me. Since then, he has been thoughtful and prayerful. Now in his adolescent years, he is navigating the storms of teenage life with grace. And I walk beside him, knowing that my presence and response to his growth will shape his journey.
This journey is worth every sacrifice, every act of love, and every ounce of effort. To all fellow mothers out there: keep building and nurturing those special gifts of God to you with love, and the wisdom that comes from God.
