Motherhood: Love Your Child, Don’t Spoil Your Child (15)

Spoiled children see themselves as the center of the universe. They believe that their needs come first and that others’ needs are secondary to their own. They believe that they have the right to get what they desire whenever they desire it. They are self-centered. They did not just develop this character in one day. It was developed over time. It is a result of the parenting method used on the child from childhood. According to what has been discussed in my previous article, no mother wishes her child to be spoiled but often compromises to suit the child.

For example, you always buy your child the items they want because you want to see them happy and also because you don’t want them to start crying at the store, you give them too much. Another example is over-pampering your child by shielding them from anything they find unpleasant; completing their homework for them, permitting them to miss any school or church activities they find unpleasant, setting little or no boundaries for them, etc.

It might seem impossible to correct spoiled kids. It may be stressful and frustrating to correct a self-centered, demanding child who is never content. It is possible, that children can learn new attitudes and actions.

However, it may take time and consistency to discipline a child who is used to getting his/her way all the time. Also, your children will surely act out more when you start to reprimand them since they cannot have their way. It may be difficult when you start but with patience and consistency, your child will relearn, unlearn., and change.

The following disciplinary methods can help your children change their conduct and adopt a more useful way of living,

1)Teach your Child the value of money
When your children understand how much items cost or how a family budget is managed, they are less likely to complain when they can not get what they want. It is crucial to instill in children the value of money. This helps them form as adults.
