MOTHERHOOD: MOTHERHOOD: PARENTING STYLES AND THEIR IMPACTS ON THE CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT – PART 4

Hello Great Mothers! I am sure we are fine. I know by now, we are beginning to identify the parenting style we are using to raise our children. Also, we know if such a style is beneficial to our children’s development.

As we discussed last week, our parenting style influences everything about our children, including their behavior, growth, relationship with God and others, and self-esteem. Today we will discuss the Permissive Parenting style.

MOTHERHOOD: MOTHERHOOD: PARENTING STYLES AND THEIR IMPACTS ON THE CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT – PART 4

What is the Permissive Parenting Style, what are its characteristics, and how does it affect our children?

PERMISSIVE PARENTING:

It’s also known as the indulgent parenting style. Mothers who use this parenting style are less demanding but are more sensitive to their children’s emotional needs. They do not establish boundaries or rules for their children. However, even when such rules are established, they are not consistently enforced. These sets of Mothers find it hard to say “NO” to their children, as they always avoid confrontation and enforce authority.

Mothers who use this parenting style;
1) treat their children as equals
2) Use gifts to bribe their children into following their instructions
3) Are very lenient
4) Give their children very little responsibility.
5) Allow their children far too much freedom.
6) Do not set goals for their children
7) Do not monitor their children’s behavior

Children raised by permissive mothers;
1) Are less disciplined
2) Are Lazy.
3) Have poor academic performance as their studying habits are not monitored
4) Are given too much freedom and autonomy
5) Tend to have anti-social behavior patterns such as; aggression, anger, rebellion, etc.
6) Are not goal-driven

Do you consider yourself a permissive mother?
This type of parenting hurts children’s development. Is there an escape route?

Keep an eye out for my next article, in which I’ll go over some strategies for turning things around.
