Motherhood: The Home Atmosphere (2)

The Atmosphere You Create Is Raising Your Children

When we think about raising children, we often think about what we teach them.

We teach them to respect others, tell the truth, be responsible and make good choices. We correct them when they are wrong and encourage them when they do well.

But there is another teacher in the home that we may not always notice: the atmosphere.

Every home has an atmosphere. It is created by the way people speak to one another, how they handle disagreements, how they respond to mistakes, and how they show love and care.

Your children live in this atmosphere every day.

They notice how you speak when you are tired. They notice what happens when someone makes a mistake. They notice whether people listen to one another or constantly interrupt. They notice whether an apology follows hurtful words or whether everyone simply pretends nothing happened.

And they are learning.

When children regularly experience respect at home, they begin to understand what respect looks like.

When they are listened to, they learn that their voice matters.

When they see their parents apologise, they learn that admitting a mistake is not a sign of weakness.

When they experience affection and encouragement, they begin to see home as a place where they are loved and accepted.

But the opposite can also leave its mark.

If shouting is the usual response to disagreement, children may learn to fear conflict.

If harsh words are common, they may become afraid to speak honestly.

If mistakes are always met with shame, they may learn to hide their failures instead of asking for help.

This does not mean your home must be perfect. It cannot be.

There will be stressful days, misunderstandings, arguments and moments when we respond in ways we later regret. What matters is what we do afterwards.

Do we apologise?

Do we forgive?

Do we talk about what happened?

Do we show our children that relationships can be repaired?

Children are learning from all these moments.

We may not remember every word we said to them, and they may not remember every instruction we gave. But they may remember how it felt to live in our home.

So, while you are teaching your children what to do, also pay attention to what they are experiencing.

What is the atmosphere in your home teaching your children about love, respect, forgiveness, relationships and themselves?

Because the atmosphere you create is not simply surrounding your children.

It is raising them.
