Our teens are still our children, even if they are acting disrespectfully. At this stage of their life. They are between being a child and adults. They are growing up, trying to find their identity, interests, dislikes, and autonomy, but they lack the knowledge on how. Also, in recent times, they face so many distractions from peers and social media. All pointing their attention to their standard of behaving as a teen.
So, as good mothers, we are not to be angry, ignore, or shout at them, nor call them names. We must understand that this is an important time in their lives, and so we need to correct, teach, and discipline them to shape them and help them cultivate the right attitude that will help them grow into disciplined and responsible adults.
Therefore in handling their disrespectful and rude attitude, we must understand the rationale behind their actions, be patient, and then strategically handle their disrespectful behaviour.
Set clear Expectations
Set and discuss clear and specific rules, with your teen. Ensure they understand the reasons behind the rules and consequences. For example; ensure you do not stay on the screen beyond 9 pm, failure to abide by this rule, your phone will be taken away from you for three days.
It is always helpful when the rules and consequences are written down or typed, and have them posted where everyone can see them.
Be Consistent If you are inconsistent about the consequences, your teen will not take to your rules. Therefore, you have to ensure they face the necessary consequences when they break the rules. Sometimes, you may need to enforce the rules.
Also, you and your spouse need to be on the same page, because they will take advantage of the situation when one is firm and the other is not.
God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
