Motherhood: Understanding And Addressing Disrespectful Behavior In Teenagers 15

As parents, sometimes we have to face our teenagers’ disrespectful behavior. It can be frustrating, and hurtful when your teen disrespects you. No matter the impact your teen’s behavior has on you, how you respond to their disrespectful attitude is important.

This is because your reactions and how you handle their behaviors influence their behavior, how they handle difficult situations, and their relationships with others.

Staying calm, when we are disrespected by our teenagers is not something easy, but it is necessary. This is because our reactions do not only influence their behavior but also affect our relationship with them. And you would not want to have an unhealthy relationship with your teens as it is a good access for peer influence.

Below are other strategies we can use to handle our teens’ misbehavior;
Ignore your Teen’s Attempts to Get Your Attention
Our teens always want to engage us in an argument to delay doing what you have asked them to do or to achieve their desire of not doing what they are asked to do. Therefore, do not argue with your teen. avoid eye contact with them, do not argue back, or pay attention to their behavior. But be firm and ensure they do what you have asked them to do.

Don’t Give In
Your teen believes they can get you to change your mind. Do not give in and allow your teen to make you change your mind once you have said No or Yes. If you allow this, you will reinforce disrespectful behavior in your teen, and he/she will always take advantage of this.

Offer One Warning
When your teen begins to display disrespectful behaviors or does not follow your instructions, give a simple warning and consequences for their behavior. If he/she continues, do not repeat the warning, but follow through with the consequences.

God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
