Motherhood: Understanding And Addressing Disrespectful Behavior In Teenagers 7

Why is my child so disrespectful? Why does my child now find it hard to obey my rules? Where, and how have I gotten it wrong? Have I failed as a mother? These are some of the questions we ask ourselves when I teen starts behaving disrespectfully or rudely.

Even though every mother hurts, and is sometimes confused at this stage of parenting, especially when you have done everything possible to raise your child properly.

However, note that this is not the time to start blaming yourself, it is the time to brace up and seek the help of God for wisdom to handle the situation. You cannot ignore your teen’s rude behavior and you cannot respond harshly as such responses can have a long-term impact on behavioral patterns.

Part of this has been discussed in the previous article. We shall continue how our harsh responses can cause a communication breakdown between us and our kids.

Communication breakdown can result to:

Strained Trust

Repeated use of harsh words whenever our teens are disrespectful or rude can erode the trust they have in you and this can make them hesitant to confide in you about their concerns, pains, and struggles.

Emotional Distress

When we constantly criticize our teenagers because of their disrespectful behavior, they may begin to develop feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, or depression. And this may affect their overall wellbeing.

Escalation of Conflict

Instead of resolving issues, persistent use of harsh tones or reactions towards our children’s disrespectful behavior can result in a cycle of conflict between you and them, thereby escalating tensions and the resultant effect is additional disrespectful behavior and a strained relationship.

God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.
