Just a few weeks after a similar occurrence on December 29, 2025, which resulted in severe power disruptions across the nation, the National Power Grid experienced its first collapse in 2026 on Friday.
Variations in generator capacity, poor transmission line maintenance, and technological issues have all been linked to grid collapses.
As of 1:30 pm, electricity generation has drastically decreased from more than 4,500 megawatts to just 24 megawatts. According to investigations, all 23 grid-connected power plants reportedly lost production during the incident, leaving each of the 11 electrical distribution companies with zero power allocation.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately identified, and representatives of the Nigerian Transmission Company of Nigeria are yet to issue a detailed statement at the time of filing this report.
