NBA Demands Action Over Plateau Killings

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the recent killings in Plateau State, describing them as “heartbreaking” and demanding urgent action from the government. The NBA is calling for the immediate identification, arrest, and prosecution of the perpetrators, as well as the deployment of adequate security personnel to vulnerable communities.

The association’s President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, lamented that armed men, wearing security uniforms, opened fire on defenceless and innocent residents in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, Plateau State, on Palm Sunday, leaving many people dead. He noted that this incident is unacceptable and demands justice.

The NBA is also urging the government to allow states to establish their own police forces, equipped and empowered to defend local communities. This, they believe, will help curb the increasing wave of killings and attacks across the country.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has also condemned the killings, urging the Defence Minister to take immediate and decisive action or step aside for someone capable of delivering results. She emphasized that Nigerians are tired of condolences and excuses, and want action, protection, and results.

The Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area, and security agencies are working to restore calm and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The NBA’s demands include provision of relief and rehabilitation for victims, especially women and children, and the empowerment of vulnerable communities with self-defense mechanisms and equipment.
