Nigeria Police Bans Use Of Fireworks For Celebrations

The Nigeria Police Force, Zone 5, has again announced the prohibition on using fireworks both during and after the holiday season.

Lawan Jimeta, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the zone, which includes Edo State and Delta State, made this announcement in a statement released by DSP Tijani Momoh, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, on Saturday, December 10, in Abuja.

The explosive devices, according to the AIG, have the potential to endanger the lives and properties of people, disrupt public tranquillity, and unnecessarily frighten locals.

The AIG, therefore, warned parents and guardians to ensure they and their children do not make use of fireworks, and also cautioned retailers to stop selling them.

He said, “In view of the above, the zone hereby appeals to the general public, parents and guardians alike, to desist from detonating or lighting these devices.

“Parents are to encourage their children and wards against the purchase or use of these items.

“Retailers of these devices are equally advised and warned to stop the sale, as any person or group of persons found flouting this order will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.”

The AIG also used the means to send Christmas pleasantries to other residents of the zone as well as Christians who are celebrating Christmas.

Residents in the zone were reassured that the zonal command was prepared to ensure the safety and security of people and property throughout the holiday season.

He said the region has in place sufficient security measures, both in terms of human and material resources, to guarantee a trouble-free and seamless Yuletide celebration.

Jimeta further urged everyone to observe the celebrations in moderation while also remaining conscious of their surroundings for security reasons.

He said, “Suspicious persons or movements should be reported to the nearest Police Station immediately.”
