Nigerian Police Now Joining Cult And Doing ‘Yahoo-Yahoo’ – AIG

Adeleke Adeyinka Bode, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 (Lagos and Ogun), has expressed fear over some Nigerian Police Force members who engage in cultism and internet fraud, also known as Yahoo-Yahoo.

He claimed that the policemen involved in these crimes are the ones undermining the police force’s attempts to rid the country of crime and damaging its reputation.

The AIG said that a police officer in a specific cult group would go above and beyond to defend members of his group, even if they had broken the law.

While bemoaning the high rate of cultism among the policemen, he cautioned them against acting in a way that could cause civil unrest and charged Lanre Bankole, the commissioner of police for Ogun State, to find and arrest any officers engaging in cultism and cybercrime.

The AIG said, “If you (police officers) are a cultist I don’t think you should show it to people because it is wrong; and do you know why it is wrong even if you are not wicked? if you belong to a cult group, there is no way you are not going to favour a member of your cult, unless you are not a good cult member.

“In a situation where a police officer is a member of a cult group and people in the society know that he is a cultist, his activities are related to cultism, I think it is sad.

“There are some of our policemen too now that are into cybercrime, popularly know as Yahoo-Yahoo, especially policemen who find themselves in places where we have institutions of higher learning; it is very common. You (Commissioner) need to fish them out and you need to preach to them.”

Speaking in Abeokuta, Adeleke cautioned that another #EndSARS demonstration might spell the end of the police and urged his men to treat the public with more professionalism and civility.

He said, “Another EndSARS may lead to the end of the police.”
