Nigerians Reportedly Stranded In Sudan Despite FG’s Claims

The Federal Government declared on Sunday that all Nigerians fleeing the situation in Sudan had been successfully evacuated, adding that no Nigerian lives had been lost during the evacuation process.

However, according to information obtained by Daily Trust, some stranded Nigerians were still in Port Sudan on Saturday.

There are still 92 students left behind, according to a source who asked to remain anonymous but is knowledgeable of the circumstances in Port Sudan.

He claimed that certain people who had spoken out against the situation in Sudan were barred from boarding the trip back home. However, this has been refuted by the authorities.

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development (FMHADMSD) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) released a joint statement on Sunday that was signed by Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo and Amb. Janet Olisa on behalf of the FMHADMSD and MFA, respectively, stating that no Nigerian refugee had been left behind in Sudan.

The statement claims that 15 flights were sent out by the federal government to fly 2,518 Nigerian people out of Sudan.

The statement read in part, “In fulfillment of the directives of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, that no Nigerian fleeing the crisis in Sudan should be left behind, the Federal Government has brought back home, the last batch of stranded Nigerians from Port Sudan.

“They arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Saturday, 13th May, 2023 at 6:36pm aboard Tarco Aviation. This batch of returnees numbering 147 was the second Tarco Aviation flight received on Saturday. The earlier flight brought back 125 evacuees.

“As earlier indicated, this latest batch of returnees marked the end of the emergency evacuation exercise put in place for stranded Nigerians in Sudan.”

The government announced that an evacuation operation would be organized for other Nigerians who might want to return home in the future.
