‎Nigerians To Pay $80 Duty On Every Package Sent To The US — NIPOST

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) declared on Friday, August 29, that Nigerians must now pay a compulsory customs duty of $80 (or its equivalent in naira) for every package dispatched to the United States, with letters and documents being exempt from this fee.

NIPOST clarified that this measure aligns with a U.S. Executive Order that eliminates de minimis exemptions for all postal shipments globally, which previously permitted low-value packages to enter the U.S. without incurring customs duties.

“With effect from August 29, 2025, and in compliance with the Executive Order, all postal items to the United States—except for letters and documents—will now attract a prepaid customs duty of USD $80 (or its naira equivalent) at the point of acceptance in Nigeria,” NIPOST stated in a circular.

The agency also highlighted that worldwide logistics operations have faced disruptions, as airlines and cargo carriers adopt more stringent handling protocols for shipments headed to the U.S., potentially causing extended transit and processing periods, which may lead to delivery delays. Furthermore, all packages will face intensified Customs inspections upon reaching the U.S.

NIPOST noted that it is collaborating with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and airline partners to reduce disruptions and maintain dependable service.

The policy has raised alarm among regular shippers, small businesses, and e-commerce operators in Nigeria, as the new charge could substantially raise shipping expenses, particularly for small parcels and low-value items.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
