In appreciation of his contributions and abilities in the legislature, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria, was elected Chairman of the Pan-African Parliament’s (PAP) Monetary and Financial Affairs Committee, with Hon. Senator Christine Mwando Katempa of the Democratic Republic of the Congo serving as Deputy Chairman.
Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak (Ghana) recently stepped down as Chairman of the Monetary and Financial Affairs Committee, one of the highest positions designated to the West Africa following his nomination as a Minister.
Following his nomination by the West African Caucus, which was then confirmed by the parliament’s plenary before being announced by Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira.
The nomination was conveyed in a letter by Hon. Alhagie Mbow (the Gambia), the chairman of the West African Caucus, who acknowledged his work at the IPU, where he is also the head of a steering committee, the Nigerian parliament, and the ECOWAS parliament.

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), sometimes referred to as the African Parliament, is the African Union’s (AU) legislative body, according to information on its website.
It was founded in March 2004 with the main objective of guaranteeing the full involvement of African peoples and grassroots groups in economic integration and governance throughout the continent.
Up to 275 members, representing the 55 AU member nations, make up the PAP. The national legislatures of each member state choose up to five representatives, including at least one woman.
Oversight, advising, and consultative powers are exercised by the Parliament, which is elected by universal suffrage with the ultimate goal of becoming an entity with complete legislative authority.
