Nigeria’s football community is mourning the loss of former Super Eagles midfielder, Henry Nwosu, who passed away at 62. Nwosu, known as the ‘Youngest Millionaire,’ died after five days in intensive care at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
Nwosu was a key player in Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph, the country’s first continental title. He was just 17 years old at the time, making him the youngest member of the winning squad. His impressive performances earned him a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most talented midfielders.
A creative and visionary player, Nwosu played for several Nigerian clubs, including New Nigeria Bank FC and African Continental Bank FC. He also had stints abroad with ASEC Mimosas and Racing FC Bafoussam. Nwosu represented Nigeria in multiple AFCON tournaments and the 1980 Olympic Games.
After retiring from football, Nwosu transitioned into coaching and youth development, serving as an assistant coach with Nigeria’s national teams. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Nigerian footballers.
Tributes have poured in from former teammates, football administrators, and fans, remembering Nwosu’s contributions to Nigerian football. His passing comes just days after the death of former Super Eagles coach, Adegboye Onigbinde.
