North Korea Claims It Has Tested An Underwater Nuclear Attack Drone

In reaction to last week’s joint naval drill involving South Korea, the US, and Japan, North Korea claims to have tested an alleged underwater nuclear attack drone.

The country still holds its opponents accountable for escalating tensions in the area.

The purported drone test occurred a few days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his nation would rewrite its constitution to designate South Korea as its most dangerous foreign foe and that he would abandon his nation’s long-standing aim of peaceful unification with South Korea.

With Mr. Kim speeding up his weaponry displays and threatening nuclear war, tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at an all-time high. In response, the US and its Asian allies have increased joint military drills.

The purported nuclear attack drone that North Korea tested for the first time last year is just one of many weapon systems that have been seen in recent years as Mr. Kim builds up his stockpile of nuclear-capable missiles.

The military of South Korea has maintained that the North has overstated the drone’s alleged ability to launch attacks against enemy ships and ports.

The North Korean military said that it carried out the test in its eastern seas in retaliation for the US, South Korea, and Japan naval exercises, which concluded on Wednesday in waters off the coast of Jeju island.

“Our army’s underwater nuke-based countering posture is being further rounded off and its various maritime and underwater responsive actions will continue to deter the hostile military manoeuvres of the navies of the US and its allies,” the North’s defense ministry said in a statement.

“We strongly denounce the US and its followers for their reckless acts of seriously threatening the security of the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) from the outset of the year and sternly warn them of the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by them.”
