Ohanaeze Ndigbo To Bury Former President Amb. George Obiozor

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the leading Igbo socio-cultural group, has announced plans for the burial of Former President Amb. George Obiozor in its National Executive Council.

The late Obiozor will be laid to rest at his hometown of Awo-Omamma, Imo state, on Friday, February 10, 2023, according to Ohanaeze Secretary General Okey Emuchay, who made the announcement shortly after an emergency meeting of the NEC at the organization’s national secretariat in Enugu.

The National Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, Lagos, and Abuja will all host events before the late president-general is laid to rest, according to Emuchay, and there will also be a valedictory session at the national secretariat.

The former Ohanaeze President-General, Gary Enwo-Igariwey, will serve as the burial committee’s chairman, and I.C. Ihemedu, the PG of Ohanaeze’s Imo state, will serve as its secretary. He also stated that the burial committee will be made up of all NEC members and other stakeholders from all seven Ohanaeze states.

Emuchay added that the funeral for Ohanaeze’s late deputy president general, Joel Kroham, who passed away in August, would take place on February 4 in Rivers State in 2023.

He noted that this was the first time the organization had lost both its president general and deputy at nearly the same time.

He said, “A central planning committee will come up together with sub-committees. The chairman and the secretary will handle that.

“The NEC however wants to assure that the ship of Ohanaeze is in safe hands.

“We shall pass through this very difficult period and everything will be done to ensure that the late Obiozor, his deputy and Mbazuilke Amaechi who also died on November 1, 2022, are accorded the dignity and honour that they deserve.”

The NEC issued a plea to all Ohanaeze members, both in Nigeria and abroad, to set aside time to establish condolence registers and give people a chance to say farewell to Obiozor.

Obiozor was chosen to serve as the 10th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. He passed away in December 2022 at the age of 80 on January 9, 2021.
