Ondo Nurses Begin Indefinite Strike Action

The Ondo State Council of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has announced an indefinite suspension of services at public health institutions throughout the state, beginning January 31, 2025.

The association underlined that the strike is not a demand for more pay, but rather for justice, parity, and recognition of nurses’ vital role in the healthcare system.

At a press conference in Akure, Comrade Felix Orobode, Chairman of Ondo NANNM, expressed concern with the state government’s reluctance to address issues highlighted since 2023.

Orobode claimed that the government had broken promises made during discussions, despite concessions by the group. Key requests include paying the rest of January 2025 salaries based on the 100% new compensation table, settling arrears for Promotion and Hazard Allowances, resuming negotiations on Uniform Allowance, and correcting the 2022 Conversion Exercise for Nurses.

“The government’s refusal to address nurses’ welfare has left us with no other option but to take this action,” Orobode said. “Nurses can no longer endure the financial and professional neglect that has characterized our relationship with the government.”

He urged stakeholders and the general public to support their cause, underlining that the strike is ultimately beneficial to the state’s healthcare delivery system.

NANNM has urged its members to remain off duty beginning midnight on January 31 until their demands are realized.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
