One Student Dead, Several Injured As Gunmen Attack In Plateau State

On Friday night, gunmen killed one person and injured two others in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.

According to a source, all of the victims were students of a nearby boarding school.

The students had gone to a neighbouring filling station to charge their phones when the attackers opened fire, killing one of them instantly and injuring the other two in various manners, according to the source.

Sunday Gyang, a local community leader, confirmed the attack and said the students were attacked around 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

According to him, “What happened was that yesterday afternoon (Friday) some Fulani herdsmen who were staying at a location in the community using their cows to destroy farmlands of the native community were driven away. So, last night (Friday), they sent terrorists to attack the community.”

The incident occurred near Science School Kuru, at Emmy fueling station, opposite Assemblies of God’s Church close to the school, according to the community leader, who said that the robbers arrived in a Peugeot J5 vehicle and started firing on people, especially students.

He bemoaned the fact that some Science School Kuru students who went there to charge their phones were severely wounded, stating that one student died instantaneously and the other two were sent to a hospital for treatment.

He went on to state that the gunfire drew the notice of some security escorts in transit, who intervened and chased the terrorists away, claiming that the attack on the village would have been far more devastating.

When reached, Alabo Alfred, the state police public relations officer, verified the occurrence and promised to publish a statement.
