Organ Harvesting: Nigerian Doctor Arrested For Allegedly Conspiring With Senator Ekweremadu

Obinna Obeta, a Nigerian doctor who lives in the UK, is accused of planning a scheme with former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, to smuggle a man into the UK so they could harvest his kidney for a transplant.

Obeta, 50, was accused of organizing the trip of a 21-year-old male with the intention of exploiting him between August of last year and this May when he appeared before the Bexley Magistrate court on Thursday, July 13.

In a second accusation, it is claimed that the Nigerian Doctor, Obeta plotted with the former Senate President to arrange or facilitate the victim’s travel with the intention of using him for organ harvesting.

The 21-year-old man, named David Ukpo, whom the Ekweremadus brought to the UK, approached the police and claimed to have been treated like a slave and that he was “15” years old.

The Nigerian lawmaker and his wife have since been detained in the UK on accusations of organ harvesting after arriving at Heathrow from Turkey on June 21.

It was later discovered that David Ukpo lied about his age, as evidenced by the biodata on his Nigerian bank accounts and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), both of which showed him to be 21 years old.

However, the court case is still on and Obeta was accused on Thursday of conspiring with Ike Ekweremadu and arranging or facilitating the travel of another person with the intent to exploit.

The court had previously heard testimony from prosecutor Tim Probert-Wood that the case included “exploitation and the harvesting of an organ.”

According to the prosecuting attorney, the Ekweremadus intended to have David’s kidney removed so they could transplant it to their daughter.

The prosecuting attorney said, “The case began on 5 May 2022 when the complainant presented himself at Staines Police Station and claimed he had been transported to this country for the purpose of his kidney being removed.

“He arrived on 20th February 2022 and was taken to Royal Free Hospital where tests were conducted. For the purpose he was there he did not consent to the taking of his kidney.

“He returned to the house he was staying and his treatment changed dramatically. He described being treated effectively as a slave.”

On August 4, the three defendants, who are currently in custody, are scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey.
